Martinique Island This Island is one of the overseas regions of France. Its western
coastline is flanked by the Caribbean Sea and the eastern coastline borders the Atlantic Ocean. It
neighbors the Islands of Guadeloupe, St Lucia, Barbados and Dominica. Spread over an area of
about 425 sq miles up to about 50 miles long and up to about 24 miles wide, the north of the
Island is mountainous with rainforests and the beaches have gray to black sand because of ash
from a few extinct and active volcanoes. Beaches in the south have white sand. Tourist
attractions here include beautiful beaches, coral reef barriers, water sports, parks, gardens,
dense forests, rivers, waterfalls, rolling hills, picturesque bays and coves, wildlife, hiking, golf and
shopping, Fort de France is the capital, the largest city, a major harbor and the airport. Direct and

Getting around: Buses are available for both urban and inter-city travel, taxico the shared taxis
serve from early morning to 6pm, auto rentals and ferries are available.
Tourist seasons: High tourist season is December to April, mid season May to June and low
